This program is a fantastic way to both enjoy the South Carolina Low Country and truly connect to the area. Spend a few leisurely hours on this tour that includes a visit to the quaint and historic town of Bluffton, South Carolina.
Stroll the lazy streets dotted with 19th century homes and visit the antebellum Church of the Cross. Visit quaint shops and Lowcountry art galleries along the way.
Start off with a Visit to the Heyward House – Experience life in the past as you see how the Cole and Heyward families and their slaves and servants lived their daily lives on this historic property which includes an antebellum house, slave cabin, and summer kitchen. Discover the events that led to the destruction of all but 8 of the original Bluffton houses and see how the families, house, and town changed throughout history. This docent led tour engages the visitor as they stroll back in time to life in the lowcountry during the 1800s.
Next up, a visit to the Antebellum Church of the Cross – Passing through the heavy pine front doors at The Church of the Cross seems like a step into a time long gone. It’s easy to imagine the summer congregation of island planters beginning June Sundays with worship. You can almost feel the cool morning air wafting through open windows as the harmonies of hymns float out. You might picture the small winter congregation in 1900 huddling around a potbellied stove in the narthex chapel, listening to St. Matthew’s recounting of the nativity on a chilly Christmas Eve. Indeed many church members recall such days and nights until the early 1980’s. They remember the leaky roof, visiting priests, and bees and squirrels nesting in the walls and crevices.
Enjoy a Stroll through history – wander into the eclectic shops, artisan studios and art galleries. A highlight of this charming collection of boutiques and galleries is a stop at the flagship store, Spartina 449 where guests are greeted with cool lemonade and cookies for a shopping excursion. Spartina 449 is an accessory line launched from Daufuskie Island and is one of the fastest growing lines in the country.
Eat Lunch at the Bluffton Family Seafood Restaurant where guests will enjoy authentic Lowcountry barbecue including Pulled Pork, BBQ Chicken, Baked Beans, Cole Slaw, and a refreshing glass of Sweet Tea or Water. Dietary restrictions are cared for.
